Air India Crash: Boeing Dreamliner Tragedy Unfolds

On June 12, 2025, an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Flight AI171, crashed seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad’s Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Gujarat, India. Traveling to London’s Gatwick Airport, the plane carried 230 passengers and 12 crew members. It swooped into a medical college hostel in the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, flaring into a fireball.

The cockpit voice and the new flight data recorders of Air India are being investigated.

The crash killed 280 people, including 241 on board and 39 on the ground. It was considered one of the deadliest aviation catastrophes in recent history. Only one passenger, Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, survived, likely due to his seat near an emergency exit.

Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner Technical Details

The plane was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a twin-aisle jet designed for long-haul routes. Delivered to Air India in January 2014 after its first flight in December 2013, it was part of the airline’s fleet of 34 Dreamliners, with plans to order at least 20 more.

The Dreamliner, known for its fuel efficiency and advanced technology, is flown by over 1,100 aircraft worldwide. Air India has been updating its fleet with Boeing and Airbus jets, adding luxurious cabins to compete in the global rankings.

Reason Behind Crash According to Black Box

The flight, AI171, lost its signal at 1:38 p.m. local time, less than a minute after takeoff. The plane reached a maximum altitude of 625 feet, despite the airport’s ridge of 200 feet, before crashing into a residential area.

CCTV footage showed the aircraft struggling to climb, maintaining a wings-level, nose-up position.

The flight crew issued a mayday call, reporting a loss of power and thrust. The crash caused explosions and thick smoke, fatally devastating the hostel during lunch hour.

Only Survival Vishwash Kumar Ramesh Told the Unfold Story

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin, was seated in 11A near an emergency exit and was the only survivor. Ramesh told the Hindustan Times from a hospital that “It happened so quickly,” He was visiting family in India and lost his brother, seated elsewhere on the plane. His cousin, Ajay Valgi, told reporters in Leicester, England, that Ramesh called his family, saying he was “fine” but devastated; the passenger list included 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian.

Investigations Are Undergoing on Multiple Factors

India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, with help from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board, is leading the probe. The black box recovered the cockpit voice and flight data recorders. These are critical for understanding the crash.

Investigators are examining engine performance, landing gear, and flap settings, as the gear appeared to remain down after takeoff, an unusual occurrence. They are also reviewing pilot training, rest schedules, maintenance records, takeoff weight, and weather conditions, with temperatures near 100°F potentially affecting performance. Video footage of the takeoff is under scrutiny.

Boeing’s Past Technical Faults Under Scrutiny

The crash, the first fatal incident for a Boeing 787 Dreamliner since its 2011 debut, has raised questions about Boeing’s safety record. The Dreamliner faced issues, including lithium battery fires in 2011, which led to a brief grounding, and manufacturing flaws in 2022 that halted deliveries for a year.

A 2024 whistleblower alleged that shortcuts were taken in 787 production, causing stress on airplane joints, a claim that Boeing denied. Jeff Guzzetti, a former NTSB investigator, stated that the crash is unlikely to be tied to manufacturing, given the plane’s decade-long service. “It got off the runway but couldn’t climb,” he said, suggesting multiple failures.

Incident Impact on Boeing and Air India

Boeing, led by CEO Kelly Ortberg since August 2024, faces renewed scrutiny following recent safety crises, including two 737 Max crashes and a 2024 incident involving a Max 9 door plug. The Air India crash could impact Boeing’s reputation. However, Wolfe Research reported on June 12, 2025, that the financial effects may be limited due to strong demand for 900 additional Dreamliners.

Air India is working to improve its safety record following a 2020 crash and has ordered safety checks on its 787 fleet. The investigation’s findings, expected in 2026, will determine Boeing’s and Air India’s next steps.

Global Response and Investigation

The black box has been recovered, as confirmed by India’s Civil Aviation Minister. The U.S. NTSB, Boeing, and GE Aerospace are involved in the rescue operation in accordance with international standards. However, the results are still being processed, and families are waiting for DNA identifications.

The U.K. opened a hotline for British citizens, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer calling the crash “devastating,.”
