Cairo, Egypt– Amid rising tensions in the Middle East, Egypt has announced that it will host an emergency Arab summit on February 27 to address “new and dangerous developments” concerning the Palestinian cause.
The announcement follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent proposal to resettle Palestinians from the Gaza Strip, which has ignited widespread condemnation from key Arab allies, including Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.
Trump remarked at a White House discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last week that he has been met with strong opposition throughout the Arab world. Both Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah II have rejected Trump’s call to resettle 1.8 million Palestinians in Gaza, as well as his suggestion for the U.S. to assume ownership of the enclave.
Despite this clear opposition, Trump has claimed they would eventually accept his plan.
In response to these developments, Egypt’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement confirming that Cairo would host the Arab League summit following high-level consultations among Arab nations in recent days. The statement specifically mentioned that the state of Palestine had requested the summit be held to address the “new and dangerous developments for the Palestinian cause.”
The primary purpose of the meeting is to formulate an Arab response to Trump’s proposal that would be completely united and also to find ways to defend Palestinian interests, which are currently at stake due to the recent activities. The summit, where Arab leaders gather to manage growing tensions and draw up a course for the region, is predicted to be a crucial event.
